Denso decides on Siemens as the foundation for model-based development – What does it mean?

On June 24, 2021, Siemens AG and Siemens Digital Industries Software (“Siemens”) announced that Denso Corporation (“Denso”) has selected Siemens software and services as the technological foundation for Denso’s next generation of Model Based Development (MBD).

This announcement does not mean that Denso has decided to use only one software vendor for its MBD infrastructure and will not use products from other vendors, but rather that Denso will use Siemens products for part of its MBD process and will continue to do so.

Denso is using Flotherm

The specific Siemens solution that Denso has been using and will continue to use is Simcenter Flotherm.
Flotherm, originally Mentor Graphics’ fluid flow analysis software dedicated to thermal design and used for thermal analysis of electronic products. With the acquisition of Mentor Graphics by Siemens, it became part of the Simcenter family. Denso has been a long-time user of Mentor Graphics’ Flotherm.

According to the IDAJ user case study, this product enables Denso to “front-loading” thermal design through model-based development (MBD).

As described in this case study, this MBD solution has resulted in improving communication between departments and with business partners.

Denso is also a user of SimcenterAmesim, as we can see from Siemens’ web information.

Optimizing the design of engine actuation systems using system simulation

In these ways, DENSO is utilizing Siemens’ solutions in several areas of MBD. In the future, Denso will continue to apply these solutions, and may also consider to expand to other solutions from Siemens.

GT-SUITE and others are also being used

On the other hand, Denso is also a user of non-Siemens MBD products, and replacing these with Siemens products has not been mentioned at this time. For example, Denso seem to keep using GT-SUITE, as one of the standard for power train systems.

In a recent interview with IDAJ (June 2021), Denso talked about the use of this product, and it is expected that the company will continue to promote this application.

“We have been using GT-SUITE for a long time to evaluate the performance of power-training systems using 1-D simulations.” “We have also started to use GT-SUITE in the development of electric systems, such as hybrid and electric vehicle drives, power supply systems and related products, while using ANSYS products for magnetic field and thermal fluid analysis of motors.”

Status of the MBD platform software

At present, there is no example of any company using only the software provided by one vendor as the basis for MBD, and they are seeking to cross-link them while using the most appropriate one for each domain.
For example, three years ago (2018), a cross-domain simulation case study by Bosch in Germany was published in a METI research report.
In it, in addition to GT-SUITE, software names such as MathWorks’ Simulink and IPG’s CarMaker can be seen.

Summary

The following is a summary of Denso’s situation regarding this press release.
Under the circumstances described above, Denso have been using Siemens’ solutions as one of the solutions to realize MBD, and they will continue to work as a partner and promote cooperation in areas such as requests for additional functional development.
On the other hand, they will probably continue to examine solutions from other vendors as well, keeping an eye on global trends.
